The challenge
South Lanarkshire Council were upgrading an existing single carriageway road to a dual carriageway, along Greenhills Road and the A726 Strathaven Road in East Kilbride. Mackenzie Construction was appointed as the Design and Build Contractor to undertake water main diversion works, in connection with this project.
The solution
Throughout the project, varying sizes of pipework were installed to meet the evolving needs of the contract. The team tied or cut onto the existing water main with restraining couplings and using tees, washouts, hydrants and PRV bypasses, as required.
To complete the works, Mackenzie Construction allocated it’s trained, knowledgeable, clean water management team and site operatives with DOMS IAF. Prior to road realignment and road level reduction, varying levels were encountered; some at 450mm main laid at 4m deep and other sections at 355mm laid at 3m deep. Dual mains were required and installed at the road crossings.
Added value
This complex project saw extensive implementation of our Utility Avoidance Techniques, where approximately 80 services were avoided. Additionally, 95 QCT and HSE audits were undertaken throughout the project, all of which were green in status.
