We sat down with Mike to find out more about his career journey, what attracted him to Mackenzie Construction and what he’s looking forward to in his new role.
Q: Tell us a bit about your background and your journey into commercial management.
My journey into construction started at a young age thanks to my uncle, who was also my godfather and worked as a joiner. He encouraged me to consider the industry as a career, and it proved to be great advice.
In my early days, I worked on the M40 motorway near Warwick with R M Douglas, now part of Interserve. I still remember walking miles each day across site with drawings tucked under my arm, learning the industry from the ground up.
I later spent 28 years with Alfred McAlpine and Carillion, gaining experience across a huge variety of projects before the challenges surrounding Carillion’s liquidation.
Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to work on some fantastic schemes, including the Jersey Harbour Reclamation project, Managed Motorways, Sellafield, Birmingham Airport, United Utilities projects, the Edinburgh Trams programme, airport developments and rail electrification works across Scotland, Shotts, Manchester and London.
Q: What attracted you to Mackenzie Construction and the opportunity to join the team?
The simple answer is the people. Everyone I met during the recruitment process made a very positive impression on me. I could see there was a strong structure in place, a clear vision for the future and a genuine commitment to the business and its people.
It felt like an organisation with ambition, but also one that values relationships and doing things the right way.
Q: What are you looking forward to most in your new role as Regional Commercial Manager?
I’m looking forward to supporting and developing the people within Mackenzie Construction. Listening to colleagues, understanding their challenges and helping them succeed is something that’s very important to me.
I’m also excited about building opportunities with our clients and helping the business continue to grow. Of course, commercial success remains a key focus, whether that’s increasing turnover, profitability and cash performance, but it’s equally important that we continue to support the wellbeing of our teams and deliver positive social value in the communities where we work.
Q: What have your first impressions been of Mackenzie Construction and its culture?
Honestly, my onboarding experience has been first class. I’ve felt welcomed from day one and everyone has gone out of their way to help.
What stands out most is that people genuinely care. There is a strong sense of teamwork across the business and a willingness to support each other, which has made settling into the role very easy.
Q: And finally, what do you enjoy doing outside of work when you’re not on the job?
Sport, sport and more sport!
I’m a lifelong Manchester United supporter, as well as a proud follower of my local team, Carlisle United, and of course England. I also enjoy rugby union, cricket and horse racing.
When I’m not watching sport, you’ll often find me spending time in the garden, which is a great way to relax and unwind.
