King George V Bridge is a reinforced concrete structure with stone cladding and features. This Contract let by Glasgow City Council was mainly a refurbishment project which involved many disciplines such as concrete repairs, strengthening existing walkways, waterproofing the deck and new double kerb detail in natural materials.

The £874,887 contract had to be carried out whilst maintaining vehicular and pedestrian traffic.
It was found that once the surfacing had been stripped, the existing deck of the roadway had 40mm screed and not a waterproofing layer. This screed, once removed, uncovered a deck in very good condition considering the age of the bridge (over 100 years).
Unfortunately the footpath deck was not in such good condition and part of the works to the footpath involved removal of the existing deck cover slab, which were replaced with steel framing and cover plates to protect a chamber which exists below the footways.
Other works included re-surfacing, block laying and slab laying, road expansion joints, lighting and provision of cycle lanes, both sides of the bridge and repairs to stonework.
