Barrahead Lighthouse is situated on the island of Berneray, approximately 23km southwest of the island of Barra, on the southern tip of the Outer Hebrides at the south entrance to the Minch. The stone built lighthouse, although only 18m tall, sits on the western most cliffs of Skate Point 208m above sea level.

Access is gained by ship from Oban, with all plant, materials, food and water being airlifted by helicopter from the ship to the ‘Rock’. A helipad is situated at the top of the cliffs, however this is mostly in cloud and landings usually take place at the other, lower helipad followed by a trek, on foot or by 4wd vehicle, of a kilometre. Ship and Helicopter time is at a premium, and additional trips had to be made by ferry from Oban to Castlebay on Barra, and then by small boat 23k down the Minch. Overall at least a 5 day trip there and back.

Mackenzie’s works included: Removal of all loose paint coatings, re-pointing of the tower and associated structures, application of a composite carbon fibre strengthening system to the tower murette, redecoration of the structures and tower internally and externally and finally the clearing of 1200m of drainage ditch. The total value of the works were in the region of £138K.
