      M8 Whitecart Viaduct

Mackenzie Construction Ltd recently completed the upgrading of the M8 White Cart Viaduct.

The Viaduct is formed from 822 meters long twin trapezoidal closed steel box girders with a reinforced concrete slab. The viaduct supports a dual 3 lane motorway, central reserve and narrow verges along either edge. The works involved the removal of lighting columns from within the central reserve and new lighting columns along both edge copes/verges of the bridge.

Works also included replacing edge steel parapets with a new high containment parapet system bolted to the edge concrete verges.

The edge concrete verges required reconstruction along the full length of the Viaduct. Localised areas of the bridge deck were waterproofed, the carriageway was resurfaced along with new white lining.

Due the location of the works on the busy M8 Motorway near Glasgow Airport there was significant traffic management required on the project. A specialised Traffic Management Sub-contractor was appointed from our Approved sub-contractor List. The traffic management issues were considered a key factor in achieving the contract requirements and detailed communications took place with the Client, Renfrewshire Council, Strathclyde Police and all other stakeholders. In the

compilation of the Traffic Management arrangements due cognisance was made to the site programme constraints including the use of plant and equipment on the carriageway. The traffic management arrangements were monitored throughout the currency of the contract and improvements implemented as needed.

The project at Whitecart was carried out within our Environmental Management System, which is modelled on the requirements of ISO 14001 and is designed the meet all legal requirements and those of Mackenzie Construction, it’s Clients and relevant Stakeholders. SEPA were notified prior to work commencing on site and their contact details incorporated into the Site Specific Emergency Contract Plan. Site specific Method statements and Risk Assessments were produced to address the key environmental considerations such as Spill control, Water Pollution Prevention, Dust and Air Quality, Noise and Vibration Control and Waste Management.
