      Anchor Mills

Work is now complete for the construction of a new access road bridge for Safeway Stores Limited at Anchor Mills, Paisley. The site is located at the old Clanford Motors garage off  Loanend, Paisley.

The bridge is a composite steel and concrete design spanning the White Cart River to facilitate access to both the Old Mill Housing Development and a new Safeway Store. Works comprised extensive cofferdam construction and heavy reinforced concrete abutments. The use of precast parapet sections rather than insitue were used to minimise the risk of pollution to the river, this eliminated the need for a temporary support from the bridge over the river thus reducing risk of persons falling from support system.

Environmental issues were also taken into consideration. As the bridge spanned existing watercourse contamination was prohibited. The location of site and its proximity to the water meant that actions were taken to prevent material contaminating the watercourse. SEPA were invited on site to monitor our methods of excavating near the river course for the installation of the Cofferdams. Detailed Method statements were produced and agreed with SEPA, as to the best methods of disposal of the pumped water from the excavations.  It was agreed that any water ingress into the cofferdam would be pumped out and channelled into the settlement ponds, which were sited 20-30m away from the embankment.

Significant Traffic Management was also required to implement the new road layout. A traffic Management Plan was formulated with consultation with local Council, Police and local stakeholders and was checked an upgraded as the project progressed. There was also a significant amount of new traffic light systems introduced to a number of new junctions. This part of the contract we subcontracted to one of our specialist subcontractors who are on our Approved List of subcontractors.

The Contract commenced during the early part of 2004 and with a duration of 35 weeks was completed early September 2004   was overseen by Halcrow Engineers.
